Mekkiayah is a 10th grader at Cobble Hill School of American Studies. This is her second year at Girls Write Now. Mekkiayah loves writing poetry to express her feelings. She sees writing as an escape from the real world. She really wants to try new things this year and meet a lot of new people. Mekkiayah received an Honorable Mention during the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

about Nina:

Nina has had a long career in book publishing, first as a scout and then as an agent, making a career change in 2008 to pursue other interests. Nina completed a Masters in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University and became a certified Life Coach. She has four children, lives in Brooklyn, and is a current trustee of The Brooklyn Public Library.
